Achieving ISCC PLUS Certification

At Vikan, we are committed to reducing our CO2 emissions and our reliance on fossil fuels in the manufacturing process. As an exciting next step in our sustainability journey, Vikan will be replacing some petroleum-based raw materials with bio-based alternatives. This approach to using bio-based materials is known as mass balancing, and we are pleased to do so without compromising the quality, safety, or functionality of our tools.

Reflecting our commitment to the mass balanced approach and our broader sustainability goals, Vikan has achieved ISCC PLUS certification of our bio-based raw materials. This certification provides verification that selected finished products contain a stated percentage of bio-based material, and ISCC guarantees the accuracy of our claims throughout the supply chain.

In the next several weeks, you will begin seeing ISSC PLUS logos on Vikan’s website and the packaging of Ultra Hygiene Squeegees. The logos clearly state the percentage of bio-based material contained in those products. Below are examples of the website logo (left) and product label (right):

While the initial rollout is limited to our Ultra Hygiene Squeegee range, we will continue to evaluate the expansion of this program to other tools. We will always communicate the latest news about our sustainability initiatives.

At Vikan, sustainability is at the core of our business. Achieving ISCC PLUS certification reflects our dedication to responsibly sourcing materials and implementing processes that benefit both the environment and our stakeholders. This certification is not just an achievement; it is a step forward in our ongoing journey to create a more sustainable future.

Program FAQ

Will this program have an impact on the cost or pricing of Ultra Hygiene Squeegees?

No. Vikan  will absorb the costs associated with implementing bio-based materials in our Ultra Hygiene Squeegees. Although there is an increased cost to using bio-based materials and maintaining the rigorous requirements of ISCC PLUS certification, Vikan is committed to reducing CO2 emissions throughout our supply chain.

Do bio-based materials change the quality, safety, or functionality of the products?

No. We provide tools intended for use in hygiene-critical environments and we have built our reputation on 125 years of trust. We will never compromise on the quality, safety, or functionality of our products.

Do bio-based materials change the product specifications?

No. The products containing bio-based materials are identical. Food contact compliance declarations, weights, dimensions, and usage limits are all the same as before. The only difference will be the ISCC PLUS designation on the Ultra Hygiene Squeegee product labels.

Does this material go into all products, and can you see on the individual product if it contains the material?

No. At present, we are using bio-based materials in the polypropylene components of our Ultra Hygiene Squeegees. Products containing bio-based materials will have an ISCC PLUS logo on the product labels.

Can we specify purchasing ISCC items versus non-ISCC items?

No. We are conducting a rolling change as the bio-based materials are added to our manufacturing process. Part numbers will remain the same and the products will perform and cost the same as the current versions.

How does this program work in conjunction with Vikan’s regenerated byproduct program announced in 2024?

In short, both programs work to reduce CO2 emissions by decreasing the amount of fossil fuels used in the manufacturing process. However, the reductions come at different places in the materials supply chain.

The regenerated byproduct program reuses food contact approved plastics that remain after the manufacturing process. Those byproducts are blended with “new” plastics and then molded into Vikan parts. If you would like to learn more about Vikan’s regenerated byproduct program, click here.

The addition of bio-based compounds occurs in the initial manufacturing of the plastic itself. Petroleum-based compounds are blended with bio-based compounds, resulting in new plastic. Vikan and our suppliers keep detailed records of the bio-based compound, and they are validated by ISCC throughout the manufacturing process.
